Masatoshi Murase was an Associate Professor of Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics at Kyoto University, and is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Integrated Creative Studies (ISSN: 242-0370).

He was also Director of Research Promotion Strategy Office at The International Research Unit of Advanced Future Studies of Kyoto University.

He received a PhD from the University of Tokyo in 1987. Positions held overseas include a period as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Physiology Department at Duke University Medical Centre from 1987 to 1988, and an Associate Professorship in the Department of Mathematics of the University of California at Davis from 1990 to 1991. He is the author of The Dynamics of Cellular Motility (Wiley, 1992), and is the author of Life as History: Construction of Self-nonself Circulation Theory (Kyoto University Press, 2000).

Abstract of Recent Research
His research topics are meta-biology, integrated theory of life, theoretical biology, constructive recognition, semantics theory, environmental biology, theory of aging, emergent disease, origin and evolution of Life. He chaired an international symposium entitled, What is Life? The Next 100 Years of Yukawa's Dream. This was held in 2007 at Kyoto University, to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Hideki Yukawa. In 2011, he chaired Kyoto University International Forum on Towards a New Synthesis of Knowledge. He organized many other international symposiums and workshops. In 2013, he created the Journal of Integrated Creative Studies (ISSN: 242-0370). In order to explore a unified view beyond complex emerging phenomena, he developed The International Research Unit of Advanced Future Studies of Kyoto University in 2015.

He retired from Kyoto University at the end of March 2023. He has published about 10 monographs, co-authored books, and edited books in both Japanese and English.
